Tragic Incident in Sarasota: Man Accused of Killing Girlfriend...

A Sarasota man is now facing murder charges following the tragic deaths of his girlfriend and their 6-year-old son, as reported by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

Doug Johnson, the Creative Communications Specialist for the SCSO, stated that deputies were dispatched to the Artistry neighborhood at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 23. The response followed a 911 call reporting a shooting incident on Mondrian Court.

Upon reaching the scene, law enforcement officers encountered Nicholas Novickis, 34, in the kitchen of the residence. They subsequently discovered the bodies of his girlfriend, Allie Novickis, and their son, Phoenix Novickis. While the victims shared a surname, authorities have not confirmed a legal marriage between them.

According to Johnson, both victims succumbed to gunshot wounds inflicted by a pump-action shotgun, with the young boy having been shot in the head. Additionally, the family dog was also shot and subsequently died after being taken to an emergency veterinarian.

“Currently, we don’t have a motive at this point,” the SCSO spokesman said.

According to the sheriff’s office, Nicholas Novickis was visiting his mother’s house with the two victims at the time of the shooting.

“From what we understand, they actually went to the house to swim in the pool and enjoy the day,” Johnson said. “Mother was home, but she was actually upstairs asleep when the first shots rang out.”

The spokesman said the suspect’s mother went downstairs after hearing the shots. When she called 911, that is when Novickis was alleged to have shot the dog.

The sheriff’s office said there were surveillance cameras at the house, but they did not record any strange behavior before the shooting.

“There didn’t seem to be anything out of the ordinary,” Johnson said. “There didn’t seem to be any sort of, argument or altercation at all.”

According to officials, the suspect had no known prior criminal history at this point in the investigation. Sarasota County court records showed a speeding offense, but no other charges against Nicholas Novickis.

“I think it just goes to show you that, I mean, even in a nice neighborhood, crime has a way that it can find you,” Johnson said. “I mean, this is, as far as we know, his mother’s house, and you know, it was a gated community so everybody feels safe in the gated community, but you just never know the motive of people, and you never know what they’re going to do.”

Deputies arrested the suspect with no resistance. As of this report, detectives were still interviewing Nicholas Novickis for answers in this crime. Authorities are also looking to the public for help.

“Obviously, this is a big case,” Johnson said. “They had to serve search warrants on his house, on his vehicles, or searching through a lot of, you know, phones and the residents. So they’re talking to coworkers, family members.

As of this report, Nicholas Novickis remains in jail without bond on two first-degree murder charges and an animal cruelty charge. A pretrial detention hearing will be held for him on May 29.
