A tragic incident unfolded in Brevard County, Florida, over the weekend when a paramedic from North Carolina was fatally struck while lending aid to a motorist who had also been killed after exiting his car following an accident.

The Florida Highway Patrol reported that the collision began when a Chevy Impala and a Volkswagen ID.4 were both heading north on I-95. The crash occurred as the Impala attempted a lane change, resulting in a collision between the two vehicles.

The 33-year-old driver of the Impala, hailing from Port Saint Lucie County, stepped out of his car, which was stopped in the innermost northbound lane of the highway.

As this unfolded, a Hyundai Elantra and an Audi A4 were also traveling in the same lane. The driver of the Elantra veered sharply to the left in an attempt to avoid the Impala but ended up grazing it before tragically striking the driver who had exited his car, according to the FHP.

The impact hurled the 33-year-old man forward into the inner lane, ahead of his Impala.

The Audi A4 that was traveling behind the Elantra swerved to avoid the Impala and also struck the driver in the roadway.

According to FHP, a good Samaritan, now identified as Mary Jolly, 27, attempted to stop and help the driver of the Impala when she was hit by a Nissan Murano.

Gaston County EMS announced Jolly’s passing on Monday.

“With profound sadness, we share that Paramedic Mary Jolly passed away today at 11:05 following her injuries. Mary was more than a colleague—she was family. Her compassion, unwavering dedication, and steady presence touched countless lives and strengthened the very fabric of our EMS community. Her loss is immeasurable and will be deeply felt across our organization and beyond,” Gaston County EMS said in a post on Facebook.

The 33-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver of the Volkswagen was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
