Authorities were alerted to the apartment complex shortly past 10 p.m. following a report of a missing toddler. During the ensuing search, officers found the child unresponsive in the pond. They immediately initiated CPR until the Sanford Fire Department arrived and transported the child to a nearby hospital, where the child was later declared deceased.

Preliminary investigations by the police suggest that the toddler awoke and exited the apartment while the family was asleep.
