SAVANNAH, Ga. () — Local families in need will receive new beds and bedding this Tuesday, thanks to the “A Place to Dream” initiative.

The YMCA of Coastal Georgia kicked off the “A Place to Dream” program in 2019 after noticing an urgent need for children to have safe and cozy sleeping environments, according to a spokesperson.

Pastor Herb Hubbard, who manages the program for the YMCA, stated, “Our goal is to ensure every child has a comfortable place to sleep that they can truly call their own. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has contributed to making this a reality.”

The initiative focuses on families where children lack their own beds, often resorting to sleeping on floors, couches, or shared mattresses. Since its inception, the program has delivered over 500 complete bed sets to families in the area.

Each bed set comes with a bed frame, mattress, linens, a stuffed animal, a storybook, a Bible, a flashlight, and a snack bag, the latter being generously provided by community partner P.A.C.K.

“Sleep is the foundation of a child’s health and well-being, yet too many families in our city face nightly uncertainty,” Resident Services Coordinator Brenda B. Pollen of the Housing Authority of Savannah said. “We’re not just delivering furniture—we’re restoring hope.”

The YMCA of Coastal Georgia, in partnership with the Housing Authority of Savannah, will depart from 1407 Wheaton Street at 8 a.m. Dec. 9 to begin delivering bed sets.
