On Saturday, President Donald Trump announced his intention to increase tariffs on Canadian imports by an additional 10%. This decision was sparked by an anti-tariff television commercial broadcast in Ontario, Canada.
The controversial advertisement, which featured quotes from former U.S. President Ronald Reagan criticizing American tariffs, drew Trump’s ire. In response, Trump declared that he would halt trade negotiations with Canada. In reaction to the president’s comments, Ontario Premier Doug Ford stated that the commercial would be withdrawn after the weekend. It had aired on Friday night during the opening game of the World Series.
“The advertisement was supposed to be removed IMMEDIATELY, yet it was allowed to air during the World Series last night, fully aware that it was a FRAUD,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform while en route to Malaysia on Air Force One.
He further stated, “Due to their severe misrepresentation of facts and this hostile action, I am imposing an additional 10% tariff on Canadian goods, on top of the existing tariffs.”
Both President Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney are scheduled to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Malaysia. However, Trump informed reporters accompanying him that he has no plans to meet with Carney during the event.
