In a notable development, President Trump has rescinded Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s invitation to join the Board of Peace. This decision comes shortly after Carney publicly opposed Trump’s proposed tariffs on Europe, which were linked to his controversial initiative to gain control over Greenland.

Trump expressed this decision in a message on Truth Social addressed to the Canadian leader. “Dear Prime Minister Carney,” Trump wrote, “Please accept this letter as formal notice that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada’s participation in what will undoubtedly be the most prestigious assembly of leaders ever convened.”

Only days earlier, Carney confirmed he had received such an invitation, according to a Reuters report. Trump had extended invitations to several global leaders, including Russia’s Vladimir Putin, Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu, and Argentina’s Javier Milei, to join the board. This assembly, chaired by Trump, aims to administer the rehabilitation of Gaza as part of a broader 20-point peace strategy following the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

Carney had previously expressed concerns about the transparency and allocation of the $1 billion membership fee required to join the board. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, he emphasized that Canada “wants money to have maximum impact,” highlighting the country’s desire for accountable and effective use of funds.

Carney previously questioned how the $1 billion membership fee for those joining the board would be spent. He told reporters on Sunday that Canada “wants money to have maximum impact.”

“We still do not have unimpeded aid flows, humanitarian aid flows at scale to the people in Gaza,” he said. “That is a precondition for moving forward on this.”

Carney criticized Trump’s threat to impose 10% tariffs on Denmark and other countries amid the U.S. president’s calls to acquire Greenland. Trump later lifted those tariffs after he and NATO leaders crafted the “framework” of a deal at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, for the U.S. to use the island territory for military and mineral rights purposes.

“On Arctic sovereignty, we stand firmly with Greenland in Denmark and fully support their unique right to determine Greenland’s future,” Carney said in Davos on Tuesday. “Our commitment to NATO’s Article 5 is unwavering, so we’re working with our NATO allies, including the Nordic-Baltic Eight to further secure the alliance’s northern and western flanks, including through Canada’s unprecedented investments in over-the-horizon radar, in submarines and aircraft and boots on the ground — boots on the ice.”

Trump gave a speech the following day and at one point sent a message to Carney that Canada “lives because of the United States.”

“We’re building a Golden Dome that’s going to, just by its very nature, going to be defending Canada,” Trump said. “Canada gets a lot of freebies from us, by the way. They should be grateful also, but they’re not. I watched your prime minister yesterday, he wasn’t so grateful.”

“But they should be grateful to us, Canada,” the president added. “Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, before you make your statements.”

Carney reacted to those remarks on Thursday, writing on the social platform X that “Canada and the United States have built a remarkable partnership, in the economy, in security, and in rich cultural exchange.”

“But Canada doesn’t ‘live because of the United States,’” he wrote. “Canada thrives because we are Canadian.”

The Hill has reached out to the White House and Carney’s office for comment on Trump’s Friday post.
