Two Aiken men sentenced to two years in prison for defrauding 88-year-old woman in will scheme

AIKEN, S.C. () – Two Aiken man have been sentenced to two years in prison for conspiracy to commit bank fraud.

According to the United States Department of Justice District of South Carolina’s Office, a will was executed by an 88-year-old woman in Aiken that purported to leave the entirety of her estate, which was worth approximately $20 million to Thomas Allen Bateman, 51, of Aiken, and Cody Lee Anderson, 38, of Aiken was designated as the personal representative and stood to be paid $1 million.

However, according to authorities, evidence developing during the investigation that the woman did not have the mental capacity to make an informed decision regarding the disposition of her assets.

Both Anderson and Bateman were sentenced to 2 years imprisonment followed by a three-year term of court-ordered supervision.
