BROOKSVILLE, Fla. (WFLA) — Two people were arrested on Sunday after a trooper stopped to check on a vehicle that was parked on the shoulder of Interstate 75.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, shortly after 7 a.m., a trooper observed a painted red Jeep parked on the side of the northbound road near mile marker 299.

After approaching the vehicle, the trooper said there appeared to be a man asleep in the driver’s seat.

After requesting the suspect’s driver’s license, which he was unable to provide, FHP identified him as Jayce Benjamin Timmons, 21.

It was uncovered that Timmons’s license had been suspended as of Dec. 13.

According to FHP, Timmons told them that the vehicle had run out of gas and he was waiting for his girlfriend to assist him.

During the exchange, the trooper noted that there was a strong odor of alcohol and marijuana permeating from Timmons and the vehicle.

After refusing to perform a field sobriety test, FHP said Timmons was placed under arrest and charged with driving under the influence.

After searching the vehicle, the trooper found an open bottle of “Hennessey” along with a semi-automatic pistol. There were two black bags found in the backseat as well, one filled with a “green leafy substance” that a field test kit confirmed to contain THC.

In the bag was also a scale and several small packages of marijuana amounting to over 20 grams.

During the investigation, FHP said that another vehicle pulled up to the side of the road, and the driver, claiming to be Timmons’s girlfriend, began to interject.

The woman was identified as Alaina Danielle Johnson, 31.

After conducting a search of Johnson’s vehicle, troopers said they found large amounts of marijuana, scales, and smaller prepackaged bags of marijuana inside, along with two prescription bottles.

FHP arrested Johnson and charged her with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

Both suspects were taken and booked into Hernando County Jail.
