TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. () — The City of Tybee Island is mailing notices to some residents informing them their galvanized service lines need to be replaced.

According to the city, some galvanized pipes “may have absorbed lead if lead fittings were once present,” and said no lead service lines were found during their system-wide inventory.

Lead can pose serious health risks like heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney and nervous system problems, especially for infants, children, and pregnant women.

The city recommends its residents to use a certified water filter that removes lead, to clean faucet aerators regularly, to run your tap before use if water has been sitting in the pipes and to use cold water for drinking, cooking, and baby formula.

Service line replacement notices will be mailed directly to affected customers.
