UNICOI COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) – The trial of a Unicoi County man accused of killing his girlfriend in 2022 continued Wednesday at the Unicoi County Courthouse.
On Wednesday morning, TBI investigator Steven Lowe testified to the court about phone logs from Tyler Owens’s and Stacie Brugger’s phones. Lowe reviewed texts, voice messages Brugger sent and messages from Facebook Messenger on Owens’s phone.
In court, text messages from the night before Brugger’s murder were presented that revealed an argument between Owens and Brugger. During the conversation, Owens accused Brugger of involving herself with other men, a claim that Brugger denied. Owens threatened to leave Brugger’s belongings outside, to which Brugger replied that she would come to retrieve them.
Messages from later that day reveal Owens had texted Brugger’s phone after she had died.
Lowe confirmed Brugger had made a post on Snapchat on her way to collect her things from Owens.
“This is the photo that was taken that was listed as the Snapchat memory, and it appears to be Stacie,” said Lowe.
“Was this the last time to look at her phone that she verified that she is alive or doing some kind of activity that she was alive?” the prosecution asked.
“Yes, and it was the last one definitely with a location and a photo that was or suspected that it was her,” Lowe verified.
After Lowe testified, the prosecution called in Michael Tiller with the Knoxville Regional Crime Lab to testify.
During Tiller’s testimony, photos of the crime scene, including Brugger’s car where her body was found, Owens’s camper, and materials found in the car and camper were shown, some with evidence markers next to them.
Investigators found a “reddish brown” substance throughout the camper and on the handlebars of Brugger’s car.
Tiller explained what was in each photo and the process of examining the crime scene.
“We try not to disturb the scene, but we do need to get a general overall picture of what’s going on inside there, so we know what to collect and where to collect it,” Tiller explained. “Then we’ll make a plan as a team as to who goes in first, who takes, who takes photographs, who videos it, and who’s going to collect certain evidence, what markers are going to be placed.”
Tiller explained that when Brugger’s body was found, it was handed over to the medical examiner.

After Tiller testified, the prosecution called in Tatiana Cochrane, a DNA analyst with TBI. She and Tiller had been among the first to search Owens’s camper.
Cochrane explained investigators had found blood in the camper. She also said she had done DNA swabs on the handgun Owens was found with.
She said the DNA on the grip of the gun was consistent with both Brugger’s and Owens’s DNA.
The court will reconvene Thursday at 9 a.m.
