CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Since February 21st, there have been three sexual assaults on the University of Illinois’ campus. Now, police are reminding students of some resources available for them.
The University of Illinois Police Department will work with the affected individual and assess any safety concerns or draft a safety plan. UIPD also has a special victims unit and employs a victim-centered approach throughout the investigation. Other resources for victims include a soft interview room or the ability to send detectives to a neutral location.
“It’s important because it makes the process easier on them, and not only the reporting process, but also that healing process,” said UIPD Detective Michelle Kaeding. “There are a lot of moving parts throughout both processes, so we want to make it as easy as possible because of all of those. Those are moving parts that are necessary for the reporting process and for their healing process,”
As of 2020, Illinois doesn’t have a statute of limitations on sexual assault, so you can report it at any time.
