Over the weekend, a shocking incident unfolded in a Maryland town, resulting in the arrest of a professional cornhole player. Authorities have detained Dayton James Webber, a 27-year-old resident of La Plata, in connection with a fatal shooting during a heated argument, as reported by officials.

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) confirmed that Webber, who is also a quadruple amputee, has been charged with the shooting that took place on Sunday night. This tragic event has sent ripples through the community, shedding light on Webber’s unexpected involvement.

The unfortunate series of events came to the attention of law enforcement when two individuals flagged down officers from the La Plata Police Department. These witnesses recounted being in the backseat of a vehicle when an argument escalated, leading to Webber, the driver, allegedly shooting the front seat passenger.

After the incident, Webber reportedly stopped the car near Radio Station Road and Llano Drive, asking the two witnesses to assist in removing the victim from the vehicle. When they refused, they exited the car and distanced themselves from the scene.

In the aftermath, Webber fled with the victim still inside the car, prompting patrol officers from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office to launch a search operation across potential locations where Webber might have sought refuge. The investigation continues as authorities piece together the details of this tragic occurrence.

About two hours later, a resident in the 10000 block of Newport Church Road in Charlotte Hall called 911 to report a body in a yard, the sheriff’s office said.

When officers responded, they found the shooting victim, Bradrick Michael Wells, 27, of Waldorf, dead at the scene, according to authorities.

Detectives from the CCSO received an arrest warrant for Webber.

Investigators found Webber’s car in Charlottesville, Virginia, and the pro cornhole player at a local hospital where he was seeking treatment for an unspecified medical issue, officials said.

Southern Maryland News Net, which reported that the car was a white Tesla, shared a 2024 video purportedly showing Webber shooting and reloading a pistol.

Officers with the Albemarle County Police Department arrested Webber once he was released from the hospital, charging him as a fugitive from justice.

Webber is awaiting extradition to Charles County, where he will be charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder and other related charges, Nexstar’s WDVM reports.

Outlets including sports network ESPN have covered Webber’s career, which he built after losing much of his arms and legs to a dangerous blood infection when he was 10 months old.

Webber told TODAY that since he was a child he has learned to pick things up off the floor, hunt, fish, write, drive, race go-karts and even operate heavy machinery.
