SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The United States Postal Service is clarifying what happened in Springfield late Friday morning after several residents reported loose mail on a street in the city.
Several social media posts have shown what appears to be mail blowing throughout Cook Street between Eastdale Avenue and Dirksen Parkway.
When reached for comment, the USPS said it is not mail being delivered from one address to another.
“This mail was UBBM (Undeliverable Bulk Business Mail) that is recycled,” spokesperson Timothy Norman told WCIA. “It blew out of a recycling truck when it left the USPS Mail Processing facility.”
Norman said the Postal Inspection Service and Springfield Police Department were notified, and USPS employees are recovering the mail.
WCIA reached out to the Springfield Police Department and the City of Springfield regarding this matter. The Police Department did out respond immediately, and city staff said they did not have an answer at the time but will provide an update when more information is available.
