Uncovering the Underworld: U of I Team Exposes Shocking Amphibian Smuggling and Laundering Scandals

CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — A team at the University of Illinois has been delving into the U.S. market for non-native amphibians, uncovering instances of illegal trading and smuggling activities.

The trade in amphibian pets offers both opportunities and challenges, the researchers noted. On the positive side, it fosters a connection with the natural world, igniting interest in science and conservation efforts. However, it also poses significant risks, including the spread of invasive species and diseases, and can result in dramatic declines in some amphibian populations.

Meanwhile, U of I faculty are exploring how nutritious diets affect toddlers’ brain development.

In their study, the researchers pointed out that previous investigations have primarily concentrated on international imports of amphibians, often overlooking the influence of domestic breeding practices. They highlighted the importance of distinguishing between amphibians sourced directly from the wild and those produced within the country.

Identify non-native amphibian species traded as pets in the U.S. and determine which species are primarily sourced through domestic production, imports or both
Document the non-native species present in online trade lacking a record of importation and investigate their likely origins
Evaluate if species lacking import records are sold at higher prices than species with recorded imports to assess if market incentives may be contributing to unregulated trade

Their research concentrated on three primary goals:

Between 2004-2024, the researchers found nearly 8,500 listings from 2,717 unique ads posted by hundreds of individual sellers. From the 8,472 listings, there were 301 amphibian species — many of them non-native — advertised for sale online. Out of the non-native species offered for sale, 18% of them did not have a corresponding import record.

For example, researchers found advertisements for native Australian frogs, which were lacking import records. They noted that Australia banned commercial wildlife exports in the 1980s. Brazil enacted a similar ban in the late-1990s. Despite that, the researchers noted several species native to Brazil offered for sale.

The data reveals that some of the species may have arrived in the U.S. through laundering. The animals are re-exported or smuggled through third countries, and intentionally mis-declared or falsely recorded, the researchers explained.

Not only were a significant number of species being sold without official paperwork, but species without import records were sold at significantly higher prices than those with recorded imports — a 40% price difference, in fact.

“The average is about $50 for a frog, but some of these frogs were selling for hundreds. I think the highest sale was $1,400 for one animal,” Devin Edmonds, a member of the research team and U of I herpetologist, told the U of I News Bureau. “That could reflect the rarity of the animal or the seller trying to capture the profit associated with smuggling or laundering certain species that are particularly profitable.”

But, the researchers also acknowledged that some imported species are only identified to the genus level, which is a “potential pathway for undescribed or newly described threatened species to illicitly enter markets,” the researchers said.

“Vague paperwork can become a loophole. If shipments are recorded only at the genus level, that ambiguity can be exploited to mask the true identities and origins of higher-risk or restricted species,” study co-author Sam Sucre, founder of Natural Tanks in Panamá, told the U of I News Bureau.

To prevent this, the researchers suggest a need for improved record keeping and improved amphibian identification tools to inspect wildlife shipments.

While illicit amphibian trade does offer some concerns, the researchers said they aren’t suggesting blanket trade bans. Instead, they hope their research contributes to greater consumer awareness. This can be done through multiple avenues, like partnering with popular amphibian hobby content creators and influencers, speaking with people at amphibian and reptile expos and developing certification systems with industry leaders, the researchers said.

Other members of the research team included Jane Du, a doctoral student in the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science at Illinois and Sam Stickley, a teaching assistant professor in NRES.
