No. 7 Notre Dame stuns No. 2 Georgia in Allstate Sugar Bowl

NEW ORLEANS, La. () — The No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs saw their season come to an end at the Allstate Sugar Bowl after a 23-10 loss to No. 7 Notre Dame in the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoffs.

The Allstate Sugar Bowl was a game scheduled for Jan. 1, but it was pushed back 21 hours due to a terrorist attack on the city of New Orleans in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day.

There was no score after the first quarter. However, the second quarter started off on a positive note for the Bulldogs. Stockton found Arian Smith on the sideline for a 67-yard completion down to the Notre Dame 11-yard-line.

Georgia was penalized 15 yards for sideline interference on the play. The Bulldogs could not finish the drive and settled for a 41-yard field goal from Peyton Woodring for a 3-0 lead.

However, the Bulldogs would not score for the rest of the second quarter. and the Fighting Irish would score 13 straight points.

Late in the second half, Stockton was sacked, he fumbled the football which was recovered by Notre Dame. Then, on the very next play, the Irish turned the Georgia mistake into points. Notre Dame completed a touchdown pass to take a 13-3 at the break.

The second half did not get off to a good start for Georgia. On the opening kickoff, Notre Dame returned the ball for a touchdown.

The 98-yard return is the second-longest kickoff return in the bowl game’s history. The record is 100 yards from 2013. The play is the longest kickoff return for a touchdown in College Football Playoff history. Georgia trails Notre Dame, 20-3.

Georgia’s offense would come to life later in the third quarter. Stockton connected with Cash Jones for a score. The 32-yard touchdown brought the UGA deficit to 10, 20-10.

Georgia would go on to lose, 23-10.
