PARIS, Ill. (WCIA) — An Edgar County woman has pleaded guilty for aggravated battery to a young child, which left the county’s state’s attorney disappointed he could not prosecute her for a higher felony charge.

Court records show 36-year-old Karlla Tresner pleaded guilty to one charge of Aggravated Battery/Administrating a Controlled Substance in December. She was also charged with attempted murder, to which she entered no plea.

In November, Tresner was arrested after trying to feed a child under three years old amphetamines.

Tresner was sentenced to 180 days in Edgar County Jail along with 30 months of probation, including drug testing and a mental and substance abuse evaluation.

In a phone interview with WCIA, Edgar County State’s Attorney Philip Dobelstein said there were multiple factors that would not allow his office to meet the legal standard to prove Tresner committed attempted murder. This included a lack of physical evidence, Tresner and witnesses giving and being uncooperative with prosecutors and law enforcement, and a compromised crime scene.

“We didn’t believe that there was enough to prove the attempted murder charge, unfortunately,” he said.
