UNICOI COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Ballad Health’s Unicoi County Hospital received $9.8 million in funds approved by the State of Tennessee and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for rebuilding.

The hospital, located along the banks of the Nolichucky River, was destroyed when Hurricane Helene swept through the region in September.

More than 50 people were rescued from the hospital’s roof due to rising floodwaters brought in by Helene on Sept. 27.

FEMA’s share to rebuild the hospital is $7,389,240, and the nonfederal share is $2,463,080.

The rebuild will include architectural and engineering design services that use modern best construction practices and applicable codes and standards, FEMA said in a news release.
