CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Regional Office of Education #9 (ROE 9) announced on Friday that it will not be filling the vacancy on the Unit 4 Board of Education ahead of the April election.

The vacancy was created by the resignation of Sam Banks. The decision to not appoint someone comes as the district is expecting a great change in the composition of the school board after the upcoming April 1, 2025, election.

With five out of the seven board seats up for election, ROE 9 believes that appointing a temporary member would be “disruptive” to the board’s long-term governance and planning.

“Given the potential for a majority of new board members in April, we feel it is in the best interest of the district to allow the voters to decide who will fill this seat for the remainder of the term,” said Gary Lewis, Regional Superintendent and Jon Kelley, Assistant Regional Superintendent. “Appointing someone now would only serve as a very short-term solution and could hinder the newly elected board’s ability to effectively collaborate and lead.”

The ROE is recognizing the importance of a full school board and is acknowledging the dedication of Banks’ service. Additionally, the remaining board members will continue to conduct the business of the district.

ROE 9 said they are offering guidance and supported as it is needed during this period of transition.
