Unity High School’s baseball team in Tolono, Illinois, is off to an impressive start with a 19-3 record, following the school’s strong performances in both boys basketball and football, which saw them make significant state tournament runs.
The Rockets are particularly motivated this season as they seek to avenge last year’s narrow defeat to Monticello in the sectional championship game.
A highlight of the season has been head coach Tom Kimball reaching a career milestone of over 400 victories, a testament to his leadership and the team’s dedication.
Coach Kimball attributes the program’s continued success to the unwavering support of the community, the commitment of school administrators, and the skill of his players.
While triumphs on the field were once his primary focus, Kimball now emphasizes broader goals beyond just winning.
“As I’ve grown older and grown into this little bit, I realize that winning is important and we all love to win, but in reality, the relationships that you build and if you can help kids better themselves and be a better part in society, at the end of the day, that’s kind of what coaching is about,” Kimball said.
“Seeing him in school, it just builds an even better relationship with him,” senior Coleton Langendorf said. “He’s always joking with us when he sees us, and we’re just always having a good time with him.”
