CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The students are officially back on campus at the University of Illinois and an event on Sunday helped make the big school feel a little smaller.

Quad Day is one of the university’s largest traditions. It’s an event the school hosts each year the Sunday before classes start.

Student organizations put up booths to recruit members and share what they are about.

“It’s a great event, and I hope everyone has fun today,” Vishnu Bala, a senior at the University of Illinois, said.

This year marks the 55th annual Quad Day at the U of I. The university said that more than 700 student organizations are participating.

Bala said that he’s been to Quad Day every year since he’s been a student.

“I never want to miss it. It’s always a great time,” Bala said.

U of I has more than 55,000 students. For freshman, it can seem like a lot.

“It was overwhelming, but I feel like Illinois’ just sense of community is so good, and it definitely just welcomed me so easily,” University of Illinois freshman Bella Delgado said.

However, the clubs and groups can help a really big campus feel a little smaller.

As a senior, Bala said that he has had a great experience with student organizations on campus.

“It’s the extracurricular’s that really make the university time here worth it,” Bala said.

Delgado can’t wait to be involved, either.

“I’m excited to be a student programming coordinator at La Casa, and I’m excited to maybe join a pre-law sorority, so, there’s a lot of good things here,” Delgado said.

Delgado is looking forward to the next four years at her new home.

“I’m most excited for the football games, and honestly, just everything to come,” Delgado said.

And Bala used his last quad day to reflect on his time at Illinois.

“My time here has shaped my entire life,” Bala said.

The U of I said that Quad Day the largest student organization festival in the nation.
