University of South Carolina lifts shelter order; library shut

COLUMBIA, S.C. ()- UPDATE 8:10 p.m.: The University of South Carolina has given the all clear and students no longer need to shelter in place.

“There is no ongoing emergency at this time,” the Carolina Alert website states. “The Thomas Cooper Library building remains closed until further notice. Public safety officials are on the scene.”

In a Facebook post, the university said there is no evidence that a shooting occurred and that there were two minor injuries related to the evacuation of the building.

UPDATE 7:13 p.m.- According to the University of South Carolina’s campus security, they have found no evidence of an active shooter at this time. Police are continuing to search affected buildings and ask that everyone continue to shelter in place until there is an all clear.

The University of South Carolina’s Columbia campus is reporting an active shooter at Thomas Cooper Library.

The suspect is reported as a white male with black pants, approximately 6 feet tall and still in the area. Everyone is asked to avoid the area and evacuate or seek safe shelter and barricade in a safe area as necessary until further notice.

Campus police suggests that people should defend themselves if they encounter the suspect and obey public safety officials’ commands.

Public safety officials are on the scene.
