ORLANDO, Fla. – In an effort to improve road safety and driver knowledge in Central Florida, News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero regularly addresses viewer inquiries and dispenses valuable advice. His goal is to enhance residents’ driving skills through a better understanding of road rules.
This week, Trooper Steve tackled a question from a viewer named Bob, who was curious about the regulations surrounding electric bicycles, noting some models can reach speeds up to 25 mph.
In Florida, e-bike enthusiasts can enjoy their rides in any location where traditional bicycles are permitted. This includes a wide range of areas, providing flexibility for riders.
Importantly, e-bike usage is accessible to everyone, as there is no requirement for a driver’s license. The laws regarding helmets for e-bike riders mirror those for standard bicycle users, ensuring consistent safety measures.
However, when it comes to trail riding, the rules can differ based on the specific type of trail. Riders should check local regulations to ensure compliance and safety while enjoying their e-bike adventures.
“Real quick, there are three classes of e-bike: Class-1 and 2 do not exceed 20 mph,” Trooper Steve said. “Class-1 works when pedaling and has no throttle-assist. Class-2 has an assist and can move when not pedaling. Class-3 can reach up to 28mph, and they have a pedal assist system that helps the bike move forward, but not throttle-assist.”
Something to keep in mind, though, is that no electric motor should exceed 750 watts.
“Please do your own research for your local community and jurisdiction to ensure no local ordinances have been put in place, too,” Trooper Steve said.
