AUGUSTA, Ga. ()– March heralds a bustling period for the Morris Museum of Art.

On March 6th, the museum will host its 33rd annual gala, followed by the much-anticipated Social Canvas block party on March 22nd.

Nestled in the heart of downtown along the Riverwalk, the Morris Museum stands as a beacon for Southern American art, boasting an impressive collection of exhibits. Committed to offering enriching experiences, the museum plays a vital role in Augusta’s cultural landscape and community well-being.

Emily Milburn, the Membership Director, eagerly anticipates the Gala, the museum’s most significant fundraising event of the year.

This year’s black-tie affair embraces the theme “Dress to Thrill,” a fitting tagline as John Petrey, the featured artist, will showcase his remarkable sculptures at the event.

According to the museum’s website, for more than two decades, Petrey has created dynamic sculptures from everyday (but unlikely) materials and found objects. Bottle caps and playing cards are used to build one garment; asphalt shingles and copper sheeting to build another. His sculptures are an artistic take on the iconic 1960s shirtwaist dress.

Virginia McKnight and John Cates are co-chairs of this year’s gala, which promises an exquisite evening of exceptional cuisine, live entertainment, and modern elegance, while honoring and celebrating Petrey’s garment-inspired sculptures like the one below, You can see it for yourself at the Morris Museum

The gala is the museum’s largest fundraiser. It provides critical operating support for the museum and helps to underwrite outreach and in-house programs.
