Unveiled Secrets: Shocking New Details Emerge in Springfield Death Concealment Case

In a shocking revelation from Springfield, Illinois, authorities believe that an elderly woman may have been deceased in her home for up to three years, her passing concealed by a neighbor. This disturbing case has come to light following an investigation by local law enforcement.

Details surrounding the case of Lillie Prindle’s death have emerged after WCIA obtained information through a Freedom of Information Act request. The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office released a probable cause statement revealing why Gena English-Wheat, aged 59, was taken into custody. The document outlines the grim discovery made by police officers at Prindle’s residence on November 6, 2025.

In a previous report, English-Wheat faced accusations related to concealing the death of the 86-year-old Prindle. Concerns raised by Prindle’s family prompted a wellness check by Springfield Police Department officers. Upon arrival, they discovered Prindle’s lifeless body in a living room chair, draped with multiple blankets.

The probable cause statement notes the deliberate placement of these blankets, suggesting an effort to hide Prindle’s body from view and delay its discovery. The investigation continues as officials seek to piece together the full scope of this unsettling situation.

Officers described Prindle’s body as being in the very late stages of decomposition and appeared “mummified,” with numerous insect husks around her body as well. Coroner Jim Allmon could not determine an exact time of death, but he estimated Prindle had been dead for well over a year.

Items found inside the home, however, were as old as 2022. Police said the calendar was from that year, a bottle of Gatorade next to Prindle’s body expired in March of that year, and food in the refrigerator expired earlier in the 2020s.

Officers wrote in the probable cause statement that during a conversation with Prindle’s neighbors, they learned English-Wheat — who lived next door to Prindle — had become her caretaker and that they hadn’t seen any activity at Prindle’s home for some time. The neighbors said they did see English-Wheat at a grocery store three or four weeks prior to Prindle being found; English-Wheat told them Prindle was living with her niece.

Other neighbors said they used to see English-Wheat going back and forth from Prindle’s home doing things such as taking out the trash, but they hadn’t seen her or Prindle at the home for months.

Officers were unable to contact English-Wheat on Nov. 6.

The probable cause statement explains further that the investigation revealed the CWLP account for Prindle’s home was active, and payments were being made using a card in Prindle’s name. Investigators also discovered that Prindle was still receiving a Social Security benefit and a state pension each month.

“Upon review of Lillie’s bank statements, there were numerous ATM withdrawals being made from Lillie’s account,” the statement reads. “The majority of the withdrawals were being made from the same ATM.”

When an officer reviewed security footage from that ATM, they reported that English-Wheat made at least four withdrawals in October of 2025, using the same card that paid Prindle’s CWLP bill.

Springfield Police made contact with English-Wheat on Feb. 24 and she was transported to the Springfield Police Department’s headquarters for an interview.

“After advisement of her Miranda rights, Gena advised she discovered Lillie deceased lying in the chair in the living room. Gena then placed blankets over Lillie’s body and left the residence,” the probable cause statement says. “Gena estimated she discovered Lillie’s body in August of 2022. Gena stated she did not tell anyone because she did not want anyone to know.”

Officers added that English-Wheat told them she continued to pay Prindle’s CWLP bills, had her grass mowed and made the ATM withdrawals to “make it look active.”

“Gena made it clear these efforts were made in order to conceal Lillie’s death and to continue financial gain from Lillie’s banking account,” the statement says.

Search warrants were obtained for Prindle’s bank accounts, and officers said they found English-Wheat had profited approximately $130,000 by concealing Prindle’s death. They also learned English-Wheat was receiving her own Supplemental Security Income payments during this time.

Finally, officers said English-Wheat’s criminal record showed she has been arrested seven times and convicted four times in the past; three of those convictions were for theft.

English-Wheat was charged the following day with concealment of a death, a Class 4 felony, but no charges have been filed concerning theft. She was granted pretrial release with conditions that include staying off Prindle’s property, but English-Wheat is allowed to continue living next door.

A preliminary hearing in the case was scheduled for March 12.
