AUSTIN (KXAN) — If you’ve visited a Wikipedia page recently, you’ve contributed to the remarkable 2.4 billion hours people have spent perusing English-language entries in 2025. The Wikimedia Foundation has now unveiled which articles captured the most attention.

For over a decade, the nonprofit behind Wikipedia has been sharing insights into its most-visited pages. This year, the article on Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, topped the list. Kirk’s assassination in September drove nearly 45 million page views, with a surge of interest immediately following the incident, as approximately 170 people accessed the page every second. Notably, 43% of these views originated from outside the United States, according to data from the Wikimedia Foundation.

Trailing closely behind was the perennial favorite, the “Deaths in 2025” article. This annual compilation of notable passings consistently ranks high, securing over 42.5 million views this year.

In third place, although with significantly fewer views, was the Wikipedia entry on serial killer Ed Gein. His story gained renewed attention thanks to its feature in the third installment of Netflix’s anthology series “Monster.” This series, which has previously delved into the lives of Jeffrey Dahmer and Lyle and Erik Menendez, released its Ed Gein-focused season in October.

In a distant third place is the article about serial killer Ed Gein, the subject of the third series of “Monster,” Netflix’s anthology series that has also highlighted Jeffrey Dahmer and Lyle and Erik Menendez. The Ed Gein season was released in October.

Several movies featured in the top 20 this year, including “Sinners,” “Superman” and “Thunderbolts*,” while two TV series also made the list: “Severance” and “Adolescence.”

Readers also set a new record. After Pope Leo XIV was elected in May, traffic to all Wikimedia sites peaked around 800,000 hits per second, which the foundation said was more than six times normal levels — a new all-time record. Meanwhile, the article on Pope Francis was the 11th-most viewed of the year.

Also in the top 10 this year were Donald Trump, who reentered the White House in January, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Zohran Mamdani, who won the New York City mayoral election in November, and Rocker Ozzy Osbourne, who died in July.
