ATLANTA () – A new year means new laws in Georgia that officially take effect on Jan. 1, 2025.

Georgia’s school voucher program goes into effect this year. The Georgia Education Savings Authority will run the program and provide eligible K-12 students in lower performing schools up to $6500 in annual funding for private tuition, tutoring and other qualified education expenses.

Another law involves unhoused or homeless voters who will have to register at the county election office and receive any election related mail.

Also this year, the Department of Audits and Accounts will review the state’s tax benefits to see how the incentives are performing and if they are truly beneficial.

Homeowners in Georgia will also get more wiggle room for property taxes.

There’s also a new push with House Bill 139 to get rural health care access to reform the state’s “Certificate of Need” rules for hospitals to help low income and uninsured Georgia families.

“As legislators we have to continue to improve infrastructure, make sure public safety is at the forefront, that our tax system is competitive and make sure we continue to be a state that has good quality of life that people have come to love,” said Lt. Gov Burt Jones.

Unless stated in a bill, any acts passed after the end of the legislative session will usually go into effect on July 1, unless it’s a constitutional amendment.
