Live updates: RFK Jr. to face Senate panel; Trump orders roil Washington

Washington is reeling from President Trump’s latest string of executive actions, including offering 2 million federal employees what amounts to a buyout if they do not intend to return to work in person later this year.

At the same time, the Trump administration’s expansive freeze on federal grants and other executive spending drew howls from Democrats — and a few well-placed Republicans — who say the president is abusing his powers at the expense of public services.

In the Senate, Trump’s pick for Health and Human Services secretary, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., is slated to appear for his confirmation hearing before the Senate Finance Committee. It will be the first of two hearings for the nominee, whose past controversies and vaccine skepticism will likely make for some fireworks.

And Trump has put House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) in a bind this week as Johnson looks to satisfy the White House, appease hard-line conservatives and keep moderates on board, all while navigating the House GOP’s slim majority.

Johnson, for his part, is exuding confidence, telling The Hill’s Emily Brooks during a wide-ranging fireside chat that “all this is possible.”

The Speaker and his House GOP conference are holding their annual issues retreat in Florida this week, and aim to emerge with a plan for how to advance President Trump’s ambitious agenda.
