URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The City of Urbana just approved more than $2 million in funding for programs helping the homeless. These programs say the money will help supercharge their ability to help people in need.
It’s going to six different programs in the city:
- Champaign County Health Care Consumers – $130,000
- Hope Village – $1 million
- Emergency Family Shelter Comfort Corner – $175,000
- CARES & Bridge to Home programs – $200,000
- First Followers – $190,000
- C-U at Home – $320,000
Director of C-U at Home Melissa Courtwright said the money will go toward finishing their new mid-barrier shelter on Mattis Avenue, helping expand the capacity they have to take new people in.
“Bottom line, it will allow us to have more beds in the community,” Courtwright said. “We get so many calls every single day for people looking for a program, looking for a place to stay, and it’s so hard to tell people that we are full. And so to have an opportunity just to have more open, available beds is huge for us.”
She said the new building will be able to hold 16 men, 10 women and all of their programs once it’s finished. Courtwright said they’re hoping to finish construction by the start of next year, and this money helps make that date look even more likely. Other programs like Strides are getting money to hire more case managers and support daily operations.
