URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — A car crash in Urbana has prompted community members to ask how an intersection can be made safer.

Thursday morning, Urbana police shut down the intersection of Florida and Lincoln Avenue because of a two vehicle collision. It involved a deputy and a Reynolds tow truck driver.
Both were taken to the hospital.

This intersection has had several crashes and it continues to be a problem. WCIA talked with one person who lives in the area. She said these type of scenes happen pretty often.

“Over 20 years ago, I think they made it into a, you know, with the lights, which I think helped quite a bit. One year I think the kids were in high school or middle school. We actually had a car go through our fence. You know that there was an accident that put a car through our fence. So, people do need to kind of take care and slow down in this area,” community member Susan Frobish said.

The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office said the deputy is in serious but stable condition.
Reynolds Towing did not want to comment while the investigation is still going on.

The Champaign County Regional Planning Commission studied this intersection before. It found people believe it’s the most problematic campus location.
