URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The Urbana Free Library is helping the community “grow” more self-sufficient.

The Seed Exchange Program allows anyone in the community to stop by and pick up seeds to take home. Here’s how to participate:

  • Go to the Seed Exchange on the second floor
  • Take up to 10 packets of seeds
  • Fill out the “Seeds I Took” form
  • Hand the form to a staff member at the Reference Desk

The library is also offering more resources to help community members learn how to start their own food garden. You can read more about those resources here.

The Urbana Free Library will also accept donated seeds for their program.

They ask that donors label the seeds with the plant name, location where the plant was grown, and the year. And if possible, they ask that donors include an image of the plant or email one to reference@urbanafree.org. After that, all you have to do is give the seeds to a staff member at the Reference Desk.

The library thanked the Champaign County Forest Preserve District for their “massive donation” to the Seed Exchange program.

If you have additional questions about the Seed Exchange Program, you can reach out to reference@urbanafree.org or call 217-367-4057.
