Urbana Shooting: Man Charged with Attempted First-Degree Murder

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — A man faced nine charges at an arraignment hearing Wednesday afternoon, including a count of attempted first-degree murder for an Urbana shooting last month.

Demetrius Vaughn is being accused of trying to kill Jimmy Thomas by shooting at him during an incident that occurred on Sept. 9 at 1511 E Washington Street in Urbana. During the incident, Vaughn allegedly discharged a firearm at a vehicle while knowing someone was in it. He allegedly fired six shots, with the first three striking the vehicle that Thomas was in, and the last three ended up missing the vehicle.

The counts Vaughn is facing are as follows:

A hearing will take place on Thursday at 10 a.m. to see if Vaughn will remain in jail. A pretrial hearing has been set for Nov. 18 at 10:30 a.m. in Court B.

WCIA reached out to State’s Attorney Julia Rietz and the Urbana Police Department for more information but did not receive an immediate response.
