URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — A Central Illinois DJ is passing on her skills for the fifth year in a row.
The organizer of Urbana’s She Spins DJ Camp is spinning records for another year. It’s for girls who are 10 to 17 years old. For the first time this year, it will last two weeks.
Week one is for camp alumni who will come back to brush up their skills. During the second week, they’ll help mentor new campers.
The camp teaches skills like how to mix, blend, and count music. The camp’s owner said that she remembers the challenges she faced becoming a DJ. Now, she’s helping girls have an easier path.
“I just want them to be able to have a smooth way of learning how to DJ. When I first started DJing, it was rough. I was asking people to help me, and people would help me, and I had to learn things on my own,” the owner and organizer of She Spins, Ja’Naea Modest, said.
The camp will run from Sept. 8-18. There will be a showcase on Sept. 19 at Urbana’s Gallery Art Bar. Each camper will play a five minute DJ set, and the community is invited.
