URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Another pharmacy in Urbana is closing its doors.

A CVS official said the store’s last day is May 28. It’s the second pharmacy to shut down on Philo Road near Colorado Ave. this year. Across the street, the Walgreens closed in January and several other businesses on the street are currently sitting empty.

Urbana’s next mayor DeShawn Williams said not having a pharmacy can affect the most vulnerable communities like seniors. He said one of his goals is attracting businesses that can be sustainable for years to come.

Williams said he’s been thinking of ways to improve Philo Road ever since he announced his candidacy two years ago. And now, he’s got a plan for when he takes over next month.

“What we said initially was that we were going to ensure that we had an analysis done on that area so that we can understand the type of businesses that are needed,” Williams said. “Something else that we will put forth once we get that piece moving forward, we’re going to create a business improvement district. That will allow for the community to be involved in the things and the decisions moving forward.”

He said one of the businesses he’ll be looking to add is a pharmacy to replace the two that have already left.

CVS said all prescriptions will be moved to the Green Street location in Champaign. Additionally, a Burger King recently closed and a vape shop moved from the Philo Road area.
