In the scenic coastal region of Beaufort County, South Carolina, the Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network (LMMN) is reaching out to the community for crucial year-end donations following a particularly demanding year.
The organization, which functions as South Carolina’s official marine mammal stranding responder through federal authorization from NOAA, faced significant challenges in 2025. Throughout the year, they managed to handle two major whale strandings and successfully rescued two dolphins. Despite these achievements, they operated with a limited team and a tight budget.
In a heartfelt social media post, LMMN conveyed their ongoing dedication, stating, “We’ve worked on a tight budget with a small team, but always show up to do what we can with what we have.” The post emphasized their need for continued support to meet their fundraising goal by year’s end.
The organization’s aspirations include securing funds for a permanent facility. This development would enhance their capacity for rescues, bolster research efforts, and expand public education initiatives.
Each year, approximately 50 marine mammals, including dolphins, whales, and seals, become stranded along South Carolina’s coast, prompting LMMN to respond to these emergencies with urgency and care.
