US Naval Academy Temporarily Locked Down Due to Reported Threats

(NEXSTAR) — The United States Naval Academy, located in Annapolis, Maryland, is on lockdown Thursday evening, as officials respond to reports of threats made toward the federal service school.

Thursday evening, Naval Support Activity Annapolis, the academy’s security organization, posted that the lockdown was out of an abundance of caution.

The report comes after an afternoon of threats against schools across the country, including against several historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) earlier in the day. Though the FBI said Thursday night it had determined the threats were not credible, some schools have already locked down campus activities through the weekend out of caution.

While it’s not known if there is any correlation between the barrage of threats and the Wednesday fatal shooting of far-right influencer Charlie Kirk, they represent the latest potentially violent attacks faced by colleges and universities across the country.

The naval academy is located about 30 miles from Washington, D.C.

This is a developing story.
