WASHINGTON – In an encouraging sign for the U.S. economy, layoffs remain exceptionally low as weekly unemployment benefit applications shrank to their smallest number in ten weeks.

Last week, the Labor Department revealed that applications for jobless aid in the week ending July 11 decreased by 8,000, reaching 208,000. This figure significantly undercuts the 219,000 claims that analysts, referencing FactSet data, anticipated.

Considered an immediate reflection of the job market’s state, weekly unemployment benefit claims have become a crucial measure of economic stability and layoffs.

To smooth out the fluctuations, the four-week rolling average of jobless claims dipped by 4,750, settling at 214,250.

In a similarly positive trend, the total American workforce seeking unemployment aid during the week concluding on July 4 fell by 16,000, reaching a historically strong number of 1.81 million.
