BLUFFTON, SC. () — On Thursday, the University of South Carolina Beaufort announced a project to bring a brand-new basketball arena with parking and additional fields.
Sand Shark 20/20 Project would add a baseball field, softball field, track and field space, future pedestrian bridge and hotel to campus among other additions.
The university also plans to use the new arena for other events like concerts and graduation.
Justin Rice, the Chairman of the Board for the USCB Education Foundation estimated the project will cost between $100 to $135 million.
The funding is planned to come entirely from both the state of South Carolina plus Beaufort and Jasper County.
“USCB has a lot to offer, but it’s just missing a few things,” said Rice. “And that’s the sports entertainment and an arena to attract more students to campus.”
USCB Athletic Director Quin Monahan said the project is aiming to reach beyond student-athletes.
“This is gonna be a community project,” he said. “We can get over 4,000 members of our community in one location in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, nothing could be better.”
