TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The University of Tampa baseball team defended its championship from a year ago and took home the program’s 10th national title over the weekend.

The Spartans played Central Missouri in the final game of the National Championship on Saturday, winning 11-5, the University of Tampa said.

After a winner-take-all game, the Spartans beat the Mules in nine innings.

Edgardo Villegas got the Spartans on the board first with a home run over the scoreboard, the longest home run of the tournament at 434 feet.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Tampa’s own, Cole Russo, hit a grand slam and added four more runs to the scoreboard, making it 11-4.

According to the University of Tampa, Villegas was named MVP of the DII College World Series.

The Spartans ended their 2025 season with a program record of 55 wins and 10 losses.

This win made the Spartans the only Division II baseball program to win double-digit national championships, the University of Tampa said.
