DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — A scenic bike race for both professionals and amateur riders is happening soon in Central Illinois.

The River to Rail ride is back for another year at Kennekuk County Park. There will be four different routes, with varying distances, that cyclists can choose. This event has been happening for almost half a decade.

The race starts at Kennekuk County Park’s White Oak Barn and of all the routes, the furthest is 63 miles. Cyclists call this a metric century, and event officials said biking that far is a huge goal for them.

In addition to the 63 mile race, there is also a 50, 30, and 7.5 mile race. Race organizers are looking forward to welcoming new and familiar faces.

“When I get these registrations coming in, and they’re from people who have already done it in previous years, that tells me they appreciate the ride, and they like the routes. They are scenic routes along the Middle Fork River Valley, and when people come back and enjoy their lunch, we’re going to have a fried chicken lunch for them, it’s just a lot of fun to see people get together to do an activity that they love and enjoy with other people who also enjoy it as well,” Lara Danzl of Vermilion County Conservation District said.

The event is on Sept, 13, and registration is open now. All money raised goes to continued development of Kickapoo Rail Trail for things like benches, water fountains, bike fix stations, and maps.
