Vermilion Co. 911 Director, 19-year police veteran, announces run for Sheriff

In Danville, Illinois, a seasoned member of the local law enforcement community is eyeing a significant career advancement. After nearly two decades with the Danville Police Department, a former officer is aiming to become the next Vermilion County Sheriff.

John W. Thompson, a retired commander with a rich history in the department and current Director of the Vermilion County 911 Center, declared his candidacy for the sheriff’s position on Monday. Thompson will be vying for the role as a Republican candidate.

“I have contemplated this role for quite some time, and I believe now is the right moment to offer my skills and leadership,” Thompson stated in a press release. “I have consistently worked towards developing innovative and efficient policing strategies to deliver robust and equitable law enforcement. I am seeking your support in the Republican Primary on March 17, 2026.”
