FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – A man from Palm Coast, wanted in Indiana, was taken into custody Monday night for what marks his fifth DUI. The arrest followed a traffic stop by Flagler County deputies after reports of reckless driving, according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities were alerted to the situation near State Road 100 and Old Kings Road when a concerned caller reported a vehicle swerving on the road. Deputies soon identified a blue Ford pickup, which was seen leaving a RaceTrac gas station with its headlights off. The driver exited through a do-not-enter lane, cut across three lanes, and ran a red light while attempting a U-turn, officials reported.
The driver, identified as 60-year-old Howard Johnson, reportedly appeared anxious and exhibited slurred speech. Deputies also noted an open beer can on the floor of the passenger side, according to their report.
According to deputies, Johnson struggled to stand still, emitted a strong odor of alcohol, and failed to successfully complete parts of the field sobriety test.
Taking into account his erratic driving, physical symptoms of impairment, and poor performance on the sobriety exercises, deputies concluded Johnson was unfit to drive and placed him under arrest. A subsequent search of his truck revealed additional open containers of alcohol, the sheriff’s office stated.
Johnson was arrested for DUI and driving with a suspended license and was taken to the Flagler County jail where he refused to submit a breath test, according to the release.
“Because a vigilant citizen ‘saw something and said something,’ a dangerous drunk driver was taken off the roadway and a fugitive was apprehended,” Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said.
Deputies said during the investigation they learned Johnson had an extensive criminal history in Indiana, including four prior DUI convictions. He is also wanted in Lake County, Indiana, on charges of dealing cocaine, possession of a firearm by a violent felon and operating a vehicle while impaired endangering a person, the sheriff’s office said.
Johnson is being held at the Flagler County jail on an $81,000 bond for his most recent arrest and is awaiting extradition to Indiana on the aforementioned charges.
