SAVANNAH, Ga. () – Across Chatham County, schools are welcoming families to open house events ahead of the first day of school on Monday. A fresh chapter is beginning at one Savannah middle school. Hubert Middle School is also opening a new era of leadership and renewed community engagement.

The Hubert Middle “Hornets” are turning a new page this school year. After a year of academic challenges and administrative change, the school is inviting families to reconnect and meet its new principal.

The open house and community resource roundup kicks off this afternoon. More than 20 community partners will be on-site, along with free food and school supplies. This year’s event also introduces the new principal, Timothy Cox, a veteran educator with more than 30 years of experience, including 25 years within the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS).

Hubert has experienced some academic challenges. 2024 reading scores showed more than 50% of students are performing below grade level. However, this new leadership could help turn those numbers around.

“Hiring a leader and a principal of a school is more about a person who brings all the competencies to the table, and we’re not doing anything special because of a performance of a school,” said Raymond Barnes, the Chief of Schools for SCCPSS.

The back-to-school event starts at 3 p.m. in the school gym. At 5 o’clock, the event moves to the cafeteria for the official open house for families to meet teachers, explore classrooms, and connect with staff.

Whether you’re picking up school supplies, meeting teachers, or wanting to learn more about the new direction at Hubert Middle, all parents and families are encouraged to attend today.
