ATLANTA, Ga. (WJHL) – Major League Baseball (MLB) has setup camp at Truist Park for the week, as the 2025 All-Star festivities are well underway.

On Sunday, the focus turned to the future stars of the game, as the league conducted the first three rounds of the 2025 MLB Draft.

The first 20 picks were filled with Tennessee Vols, beginning early with lefty ace Liam Doyle. The SEC Pitcher of the Year was selected No. 5 overall by the St. Louis Cardinals.

Then, a couple of All-American infielders came off the board – starting with shortstop Gavin Kilen at No. 13 to the San Francisco Giants. Third baseman Andrew Fischer followed closely behind at No. 20 to the Milwaukee Brewers.

Watching it all unfold from his position at the MLB Network set – Tennessee Vols head coach, Tony Vitello.

This is the second-consecutive season he’s joined the network’s broadcast of the draft. It’s a job that

“It’s hard to really put it into context when you’re sitting at the desk,” he said. “You’re trying to do a job that you’re probably not cutout for – or at least I’m not a natural at or do as a professional.”

“It’s kind of a healthy distraction, otherwise it’s such an emotional day,” he continued. “No matter who you are – whether it’s one of the players or you are the kids. In a roundabout way, it’s a good seat to be in. It kind of keeps it out of context until it’s all over.”

“I’ll definitely touch base with all those guys and truly – probably get emotional about it.”

Tennessee saw eight players drafted in total on Day 1 of the draft, while also losing a pair of high school commits – shortstops Steele Hall (Reds) and Billy Carlson (White Sox). Both were selected with top-ten picks.

Rounds 4-20 of the 2025 MLB Draft continue on Monday at 11 a.m. ET.
