CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Rising basketball star Keaton Wagler is making headlines once again with a new postseason accolade, and his coach, Brad Underwood, suggests there may be more recognition on the horizon. Despite the accolades, the rookie guard remains committed to the immediate challenge: winning the next game.

Wagler has recently been named a Second-Team All-American by The Sporting News, contributing to his growing list of honors that contribute to the consensus All-American team.

His impressive season has already earned him titles such as Big Ten Freshman of the Year and First Team All-Big Ten, alongside being a finalist for various national awards. Now, with the All-American recognition from a notable publication, his achievements continue to mount.

“It seemed quite clear to me that both Keaton and Mirk would be recognized as top freshmen,” said head coach Brad Underwood. “In a competitive conference like the Big Ten, being among the best freshmen means you’re one of the top players nationwide. Such honors are significant achievements.”

When reflecting on his recent achievements, Wagler emphasized that his primary focus remains on advancing his team as far as possible in the postseason.

“When I get awards like this, you know, to feel good about myself, but, you know, to just to stay focused on the present right now and, you know, just try to continue to get better each day and get to our goal of, you know, make it to the Final Four or national championship, you know, before that Big Ten championship,” said Wagler.

Illinois is the four seed in the Big Ten Tournament, playing for a spot in the semifinals on Friday, March 13 at 1:30 p.m. in Chicago.
