WASHINGTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Residents of Washington County gathered to engage with candidates seeking election in various positions for the upcoming August elections.
A pivotal contest has emerged in the race for the Board of Education District 1, where four hopefuls compete for three available seats.
During an event on Tuesday evening, two candidates made an appearance: Republican contender Jimmy Johnson and Democratic hopeful Mary Grace Wooten. Both shared with News Channel 11 their dedication to addressing financial planning challenges.
“I want a detailed report on all financial distributions. A thorough budget review is essential to ensure adequate support for our teachers. We must also evaluate any unnecessary allocations alongside our superintendent,” articulated Johnson.
Wooten, expressing her commitment despite her cerebral palsy, stated, “Visiting each school to grasp their unique requirements is my priority,” with her husband Matt assisting her during the discussion with News Channel 11.
One notable absence from the event was incumbent Keith Ervin.
Wooten told News Channel 11 that students and parents deserve a leader they can trust, while Johnson said he is looking to the future and not the past.
“All students need to have trustworthy leaders with integrity who, you know, students can look up to and respect. Also, that they can relate to,” Wooten said.
“That’s in the past as far as I’m concerned. And I look to the future, and that’s about all I’m going to say on that,” Johnson said.
Both candidates feel like they are the right choice for the position.
“If you want somebody on there who’s going to treat students and teachers with respect in the community, they need to vote for me,” Johnson said.
“Mary Grace is saying that she has a different perspective or a different view, because she’s been in and experienced, you know, really bad and really good public school systems,” Wooten’s husband, Matt, said.
Republican candidate Annette Buchanan was not at the event.
