SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – A remarkable video captured by Nexstar’s KRON reveals the moment a windsurfer unexpectedly collided with a whale in the San Francisco Bay.
In the footage, a massive cargo ship can be seen moving slowly in the background as beachgoers bask in the sun. Suddenly, a windsurfer, dressed in a wetsuit, speeds into view from the right. As he glides into the center of the scene, a gray whale emerges from the water, directly in his path.
With no time to react, the man on the board collides with the surfacing whale and goes flying off his board. The whale, which doesn’t appear too troubled by the incident, disappears into the deep, leaving the windsurfer looking dazed, but appearing unharmed, and floating in the water with his board.

The video was shot on Tuesday, March 24, at Crissy Field Beach. A separate video posted to social media captures the incident from another angle with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background.
Gray whales are not uncommon in the San Francisco Bay. Four of them have already been found dead in the Bay this year.
