WESTVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) – Westville’s Laney Cook was named the WCIA 3 Athlete of the Week on Thursday.
Cook is batting leadoff for the Tigers as a junior and hitting for an average of well over .500.
She makes having fun on the field a priority, which helps her game. Plus, her coach says a calm demeanor impacts those around her.
“If anybody has high nerves or anything like that- that carries over,” Westville softball coach Brandon Zaayer said. “When you see leaders stay calm no matter what the situation is that carries over to the entire team especially young girls on up.”
Cook is a four sport athlete. Besides softball, she participates in cross country, cheer and wrestling. Plus, she’s taking college classes and plans to obtain an associates degree from DACC by the time she graduates high school in the spring of 2026.
“It’s definitely been difficult but I do have an amazing support system,” Cook said.
She said that support system includes her parents, coaches, teammates and many others at Westville High School.
Cook is now eligible for a $1,000 scholarship WCIA will give away to one boy and one girl at the end of the school year.
