TALIAFERRO COUNTY, Ga. () – On Sunday, July 27th, just before 8pm the Taliaferro County Sheriff’s Office 911 Center received a report of a shooting near the 200 block of Park Street at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
Taliaferro County Sheriff’s Deputies, First Responders, and Wilkes County EMS were dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, deputies located a man who was shot in the foot. The victim was treated on-site and transported to the hospital in Augusta for further medical care.
Witnesses identified the suspect as Tamarcus Callaway of Thomson, who reportedly fled the scene in an older-model burgundy Nissan Altima, heading toward Thomson.
Sheriff Tia M. McWilliams was notified and immediately coordinated with McDuffie County 911 and the McDuffie County Sheriff’s Office to pursue the suspect.
A BOLO was issued for both the suspect and the vehicle.
Around 8:25 PM, McDuffie County deputies found the car, but the driver took off.
At 8:55 PM, the sheriff received a Facebook Messenger call from a man identifying himself as Tamarcus Callaway, Sr., the suspect’s father. Mr. Callaway was advised to encourage his son to surrender to authorities without further delay.
At approximately 9:07 PM, Tamarcus Harry Callaway, Jr. was taken into custody by the McDuffie County Sheriff’s Office and transported to the McDuffie County Jail.
Sheriff McWilliams said, “We are fortunate the victim was not more seriously injured, and we are grateful to the witnesses who were cooperative and instrumental in identifying the suspect. I commend my deputies and our first responders for their swift and effective response. I also extend sincere thanks to McDuffie County 911, the McDuffie County Sheriff’s Office, and the Thomson Police Department for their assistance in bringing this case to a prompt resolution.”
The GBI is investigating.
