COLES COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — A woman in Mattoon is on a mission to help get animals in need into foster homes.

On Monday, she presented her idea for a new program to the Coles County Board. Kirsten Moxley said there’s a huge need because shelters in Coles County have been consistently overcrowded.

She wants to create a program called Community of Second Chance Mission. Moxley wants it to operate under the Coles County Animal Shelter and find temporary homes for dogs and cats. She’s already a foster mom. So far, she’s helped a total of seven dogs find homes.

“The shelter is so busy with their own things that I really feel like there needs to be another person hired to be able to do that, that can do it on the weekends and do it on the evenings to follow up with those families. And basically, be on call and run that whole social media, because they’re going to be flooded,” Moxley said.

She said the goal is to have the county hire someone who can manage a fostering program full time at the shelter.

She also said this would also help relieve some of the overcrowding at animal shelters and lower rates at which dogs are euthanized.

WCIA also reached out to the Coles County Animal Shelter. The director said she thinks it’s a great idea. Moxley said when she gave her pitch on Monday the board told her they’ll discuss it more and see if they have the budget to hire a coordinator.
