South Carolina women roll into NCAA second round

COLUMBIA, S.C. () — The University of South Carolina women’s basketball team had little trouble in their first round matchup of the NCAA tournament. The Lady Gamecocks defeated Tennessee Tech, 108-48, in front of their home fans on March 21.

In the first quarter, the No. 2 overall seed for the Women’s NCAA tournament scored 33 points. They led, 33-12, after the first 10 minutes. Tessa Johnson and Joyce Edwards led the Gamecocks with eight points a piece.

They trailed briefly in the opening frame, 2-0, for 21 seconds. Te-Hina Paopao connected from behind the arc to give South Carolina a lead, 3-2, which they would not relinquish.

In the second quarter, South Carolina could not match its offensive explosion of the first quarter, but only by six points. The home team outscored Tennessee Tech by 12 points, 27-15, as they enjoyed a 60-27 lead at halftime. Edwards, Raven Johnson and Bree Hall all led the Gamecocks in scoring for the frame with six points each. Edwards had 14 of the team’s 60 points at the break.

In the third quarter, South Carolina added another 25 points to their tally. Adhel Tac had six points in the frame. She was tied with Edwards for the quarter lead. The score was 85-37 entering the final quarter.
